Whisky And Pineapple Tarts

Chinese New Year is right around the corner and Glenfiddich is back again with a clever and fun way to brighten up that festive spirit. For the 2020 year-end holiday season, the famed Scotch whisky maker had the ingenious idea to allow people to customise their own bottle labels to add a personalised touch to their whisky gifts. And let's face it, who wouldn't crack a smile upon receiving a bottle of fine whisky with a lovely message to go with the bottle?

Glenfiddich is upping the ante for their CNY gift packaging, taking that personalised message angle one step further with beautiful gift packs adorned with artworks by rising star Chinese artist Rlon Wang. Drawing upon the timeless beauty of traditional Chinese paintings, Wang's emblematic designs adorning Glenfiddich's range of whisky gift boxes marry visual elements from the East and West. The artist plays with multi-layered illustrations to tell Glenfiddich's tale, of which the mighty stag takes centre stage as an auspicious symbol of longevity and prosperity.

“I wanted to tell a story that evokes the warmth and excitement of Lunar New Year – the irreplaceable feeling and anticipation of finally coming home to loved ones. Inspired by the Glenfiddich spirit of experimentation and adventure, I created an illustration that comes alive with symbols of generations old and new. I loved playing with the symbiosis of Chinese and Scottish cultures – two connected countries on opposite sides of the world,” says Wang.

The personalised part of Glenfiddich's gift boxes, which are available for their excellent 12, 15, 17, and 21-year-old whisky range, comes in the form of augmented reality (AR) this time around. Simply head over to Glenfiddich's dedicated website, enter the particulars of your bottle purchase, craft a short and sweet message, and let the power of the internet take care of the rest. Upon receiving your gift, all the recipient of their Glenfiddich bottle has to do is use their phone's QR scanner to head online to watch a fun animation incorporating Wang's designs along with your message.

Those lucky enough to receive a bottle for CNY should try a glass with their favourite festive cookies. I attempted to pair my Glenfiddich 12-year-old with a few pineapple tarts and found it a surprisingly palatable match!
